What I Wish I Knew When I Started … in 1992

Today I was asked by a magazine to provide a powerful and punchy article to educate and enlighten women entrepreneurs.

Women who are just starting out in business and who desire to create financial security through sustainable success. THAT has been my own personal quest since I ‘lost everything’ and more back in 2002. So I thought I would share the article here with you now too because it really doesn’t matter how well progressed and evolved you are on your entrepreneurial journey, the foundations and fundamentals remain (1) the same (2) relevant and (3) critical. |
I truly wish someone shared these insights with me when I first started in business in 1992! There was far less information, collaboration, education and inspiration around back then compared to what’s available for us today. But in a way, maybe less was/is a good thing. In the Information Age, “TOO MUCH OF IT” can actually cripple us as we become overwhelmed by it all.

Sustainable Success Starts By Getting in the Game to Stay in the Game
There are 3 key elements to setting up and starting a business that will serve you and your market long term.
1) STRATEGY – Be Selective. Seek professional advice and guidance.
Your family and current connections need to be screened for validity in their ideas (and ideals) about what you should do to establish and start building your business. You should engage a mentor that has traveled the path to outcomes you desire for you and your family. Also, trying to ‘go it alone’ and follow patchy, well-intentioned but often misguided advice, can be fatal.
2) SYSTEMS – Be Conscious. Record what you do and how you do it.
Everything from making and answering phone and email connections to product/service delivery is to be recorded so that you can grow with ease by having easy-to-follow systems and procedures that uphold your highest expectations, standards and professional values.
3) STEPS – Be Structured. Build towards your bigger vision one day at a time.
Plan out your milestones and achievements. What will I achieve this year, this month, this week, this day? Break it down. Sometimes it may feel like you are not making progress – trust that you actually are! Growth occurs internally before it manifests externally. When it all seems to overwhelm you, revisit and reconnect with the mission and bigger vision you are on. And make a point of celebrating every achievement and ‘win’, no matter how small. It’s important that your mind be told you are indeed beating those demons of doubt!

QR Codes- Clever Innovation for Social Media and Offline Marketing
The Power Within Your Hands!
Here’s a clever new innovation that’s ideal as an offline marketing tactic – to bring people to your preferred web page. Next week you will see one of these on my Profile pic with an audio message embedded in it.

Every business will have at least one of these – A barcode called a “QR Code”. …The product barcode has trascended the Supermarket Check-out and now you can use the same concept in your business … as a ‘call to action’ in the palm of your prospect’s hand. QR = Quick Response. Simply by scanning the code on a smartphone, the phone user is instantly and automatically taken to your chosen web page – or audio or video message. Start thinking about HOW you could use a scanned QR code in your offline marketing and promotions … to get people to your website and to get them connected and ‘called to an action’ … into your sales funnel and process.Want to see a basic demo? |

OH, you dont just have to use this for web pages, you can embed audio files and video files too. (HELLO VIDEO EXPERTS).
And best news of all, I’ve found a guy that will make you a coloured one with a web page or an audio or a video embedded … for JUST $5!! Yep, 5 bucks and you’re in the game baby. How’s that!
Also remember to serve up appropriately readable content – meaning, get your website updated for mobile devices. Code can be added that automatically detects what type of mobile/web browser is being used by the person who scans your QR Code.

You can embed the QR Code with any information or action/link that you want. It can be used for people to find out more about you, your business, your products and services. You can embed a link to a “Gift” or anything else you want to promote that’s easy for people to access on a mobile device (smart phone).

A final tip: Especially in the early days in Australia (it’s been in the USA for a while) … include some basic instructions about downloading a scanner app and how to use it when doing things like sending out your QR code in a card, on a flier and alike. Without some basic instructions, people will simply miss it and you will miss out on having its true power work for you.

And on those days you hate me for pushing you – think about this – the pain is short term,the gain is long term – it’s life lasting and life force enhancing.
I have had staff since 1994 and are still friends with them today. They leave cause they outgrow me – THAT IS THE PLAN – and as their mental capactiy expands and their hearts open up, they come back to me with messages like the one I received from Amit above.
I’m sharing because I have a GIFT (that is a curse in the short term).
