I’m about to reveal to you the Little-known Distinctions that Have Helped me Take My Business (and my life) success to the Next Level. These Distinctions Might Offend You … But If You Keep Reading On, They Could Help You Do the Same Too!
I welcome you to this message or post or mini-course or life-break-through program – or whatever you want to call this post on my blog. I’ve taken over a week to compile this for you because it’s important … for you. I have never written a blog post so direct, so revealing and possibly even offensive before, but something has been shifting in me in the past months and in this past week, it became clear that now was the right time to share it. And now is the right time … because you have arrived here to receive it.
These are my truths, my beliefs, my values that I have decided to share with you – you will choose how much, if any of what I reveal, permeates your business and future success. Also, this is my way of REALLY getting in underneath you and your truths, beliefs and values – if that is what you want me to gift to you.
In other words, on a superficial level, you will find this information interesting. And if that is what you take away from it, I’m happy for you and it was worth my time to prepare that experience for you. BUT, you need to know, if you are more open, more receptive and more ready right now than you have ever been before, these insights can be used to begin your business ascension now – that means absolute life transformational insights along with practical pathways forward that you begin right away. If I help you to that extreme – or anywhere in between, YOU made it worth my time to share this with you.
So, here we go …
Something I think is true about you – as you look forward and move forward there are some ‘things’ that appear in your way right now and it’s making it harder/slower to make your next move and get to your next point in your journey of greater business (and life) success. I call these blocks – some are big like impenetrable walls and others are small like a pebble or stone. These ‘blocks’ are omni-present and no matter how much success you create (whatever your measure of success means), blocks of all shapes, sizes and magnitude will be present.
Your success will be met either fast, slow or never simply by how you ‘manage’ yourself into and out of, around, over, under and through these blocks. Just like driving a car on the road, the journey of succeeding in your business (and life) is travelling a pathway or roadway with all kinds of different and even some recurring ‘road-blocks’ — that’s just how it is. There is no paradise or utopia or ‘arrival point’, just that many things can get easier in many ways (especially when money issues are sorted) and they can get more exciting too because core needs are met so it’s easier to connect with happiness. But conversely they can get more complex and more stressful too. So I propose to you that success is about how you choose to experience the journey and how you choose to move forward and ‘negotiate’ each of these omni-present blocks.
I realized, with absolute clarity, after 18 years in business that ‘success‘ in business (and life) was not about ‘arriving’ at some magical utopia (you’re already there) and expecting or desiring road-blocks to go away. It was about creating greater success (taking your business and life to the next level) by recognizing that the block exists, identifying the type of block and exacting a strategy and plan to transcend it.
Now we haven’t even started yet but in that last sentence I have already given you a distinction. Did you get it? … It’s not one of the 3 distinctions I’m here to share but a significant one because it’s the framework for making my success distinctions become your success distinctions too.
And taking that idea of transcending blocks, the most powerful position you can put yourself in right now is with the conscious thoughts about developing and adopting into practice strategies that will give you the complete power to overcome any block as they emerge, and re-emerge. And it is my 3 key distinctions that I would now like to share that have given me the strategies and allowed me to put into practice powerful and practical processes to get exactly what I wanted – although let me say that ‘how’ or ‘where’ I ended up at a point of awareness I had achieved a desired outcome seems to differ – and greatly – from my original vision, but the outcome was achieved. Why? I believe that’s because other people have been involved along my journey and their version of an outcome (vision) differs from mine and it’s the blending of the two or more visions that creates a final outcome.
In case you and I have not yet had the time to ‘tell our stories’ of entrepreneurship, here’s a quick snap-shot of my business background. I grew up in a business family, my parents owned and operated a plumbing and gas-fitting business with around 20 employees and they did it with a lot of pressure of raising a family and with very little money or business acumen. The local ANZ Bank Manager was also our family manager as the business was run on over-draft courtesy of the bank and meetings at his office were a regular part of my dad’s monthly business cycle. I learned a lot about how to live life under hardship. Money talk in our home was always hurtful because we lived in financial hurt reality.
My parents actually did an extra-ordinary job raising us kids to pursue our dreams and they supported us in every endeavor we wanted to explore. The only ‘flaw’ I saw in that regard was that when we wanted to give up, they made it too easy for us to do that – they never challenged us to not quit. We did not have alot of ‘material things’ (I had ’hand-me-down’ barbie dolls that I absolutely CHERISHED) but my parents always found money to pay for the education, experiences, courses, classes, activities that us kids wanted to do. They never said NO to us developing ourselves and they never denied us the right to pursue our dreams even though their life experience was not going well. I think this was good grounding for becoming conscious around money (albeit a bad framework) and committed to personal development – two key factors to taking your business (and life) to the next level.
I started working part-time at 14 years old. At 15 I had two part time jobs and at 16, 17 and 18 I worked 3 part time jobs – until I completed High School. My family ‘disintegrated’ when I was 14 with both parents ‘going their own way’ and me living at friends’ houses so I could complete school – so I had to fund my lifestyle. I think this was good grounding for becoming focused, taking action and learning the art of ‘transcending blocks’ so I could keep on my pathway to the vision’ I held of my next success – which at the time were the most basic of needs – shelter, food, clothing, heat, etc. Focus is another key factor to taking your business (and life) to the next level. It also taught me that others are interested in their WIIFM ahead of yours. I also learned about behavior and how to get along with others, with respect for their wants and needs (to a fault I might say, but I learned from this to not be so self-indulgent that I draw life force out of others.) Obviously, it’s taken another 30 years of life experience since then to be able to articulate that to you.
At 18 I got my first full time job, which I ‘hustled’ to get in fashion, which gave me an opportunity to let my creativeness flourish. I think this was good grounding for developing my imagination around selling and being able to listen and learn what people really wanted (sometimes people cannot state it you have to figure it out)… and discovering that meant I could give them what they really wanted from me.
Meeting my first husband at 18 and married a few years later, I found myself able to craft a vision of the life of our dreams – which we did. I had drawn on previous life experiences for what I did not want as much as what I did want … and together we embarked on this WONDERFUL plan for a fulfilled life.
I started my own first business in 1992 as an executive admin and marketing consultant to business and government agencies and contracted myself for professional services. From that, I started my 2nd business in marketing and event management (previously I worked as a Corporate Trainer then Trainer of Trainers and Marketing Manager for the training organization I worked for. So I drew on these skill sets for both my 1st and 2nd businesses). In my event management company I learned the value of time for dollars and the price you pay on a personal level when your time is tied to a client outcome.
I grew this business on the back bone of working for the Federal Government and directly for the [then] Deputy Prime Minister, The Honorable Tim Fischer on their international Trade and Investment Conferences. With budgets of $3M, I quickly learned how to play the game at that level and I let my business consciousness expand to be able to accept that level of money responsibility (and expectation). I also learned that people on wages do just enough to get paid so they can feed their family and that the people around you can indeed impact on your ‘pursuit of excellence’. This is when I began to understand that the resolve you have for an extra-ordinary life is set by the resolve you have to develop an extra-ordinary mindset because the way you think affects the way you act (actions) and act-out (behavior) and they have a direct impact on the results that you get in your business and your life.
At this point (1996) I took my business on to the internet. (my story about getting started in business on the internet)
Feeling the frustration of not expressing his own entrepreneurialism, my husband purchased a Powder-Coating business, putting our house under a very large mortgage and within weeks of acquiring it, we discovered we were sold the ultimate ‘lemon’. Forced to borrow more, we innovated and broke industry norms (we knew nothing about the industry really but relied more on our imagination, determination, focus and commitment to our life plan). We developed processes that had never been down ANYWHERE in the world before and like a couple of wide-eyed kids, we ‘went for it’. Well as it turns out, eventually it worked! A lot more money went in to the redevelopment of the entire business than I could have ever imagined we would spend (and spatterings of my own parents’ experiences around money began to repeat themselves. I learned that leverage was crucial to fast-tracking and that if you want to innovate without any benchmarks, you better have a deep pocket and a ‘big heart’ – cause you’ll be pushed to your limits professionally and personally.
It wasn’t enough that we had already gone so far down the debt hole, we diversified the business and began our own metal manufacturing plant as well. These businesses operated 24/7/365 – employees on 3 shifts and a management team to oversee it all. On Saturday’s I would be out in the factory cutting steel ready for welding and/or loading the ovens to bake the paint on metal products, or cleaning the toilets after a factory full of ‘men’ or whatever had to be done – there was no option to outsource, we worked every waking, functioning minute we could to create success. Then something really bad happened, overnight 95% of our income disappeared out of the business. By that I mean we lost 95% of our customer base. How did that happen? In short, we learned the very valuable lessons about honesty, trust, respect and that not all people think that way, even those that you trust with your livelihood – which is equivalent in many ways to trusting with your life.
At this point, things were desperate and not only were we in a lot of trouble, my husband did not want anyone around us, especially our families, to know what was going on. This is an immense pressure to live under – the pressure of the bank, the responsibility to your staff (one of which was my dad), the pressure and responsibility to live up to the ideals our families had about us and expected from us, it was quite surreal. BUT, we ’played the game’ of hiding the truth. I cannot put into words really what this was like, to essentially, live a lie. I learned from this experience that you must stay connected with your truth and business integrity always and catch yourself and recalibrate when you stray. Business integrity begins with personal integrity – I use integrity here to align all those ideals we have about being congruent. I think if I continued to live my life like that, my life would have already ended, even if only by metaphor.
We rebuilt those businesses - it was quite remarkable really what we did and it was a team effort - including using the power of what I had learned on the internet and eventually (when it was too late for us), my husband sold both businesses for a profit. He went through a lot. It would have been really easy to close out and end up in the loop of excessive bad debt and never get out of it. The reasons for our business success clearly came back to our mind-set and drawing on all the lessons we had learned and overcoming our fears of failure. The problem was, we did not apply the same quality values to ourselves, our relationship and our life. And a pattern appeared!
So for the next few years, whilst I was figuring out the internet some more, and selling a few products (often not for profit), I focused on learning about me and learning to love me … and love others. I learned about the process of ‘letting go’ and giving myself permission to actually find Happiness, in fact it was only during these times that I really began to understand the difference between FUN and HAPPINESS. And in synchronicity with that, business on the internet provided me with technology to replace staff, automation to leverage time (and staff) and a lifestyle like I had never seen or heard of before – that I had freedom to be where I want and money to do what I want.
I learned that anger was a big block to move forward that hurts yourself the most and that projecting judgments on others was really a mirror back to what I did not like about myself. I learned that I really suffered badly from a lack of self confidence (I still get that in tinges today – I’m as nervous as hell writing this to you – nervous about my ability to succinctly communicate my message FOR YOU.) I learned that ‘your words are your worth’ and I learned that if you cannot find something valuable to say, it’s best left unsaid and that consciousness of that was important. I also learned that when you find love for yourself, you can love many others – even if you have to let them go, you can let them go with love or if you have to ‘deal with something’ you can deal with it from a position of love. So I have a saying, you may have heard it before “no matter what happens to you, stay in the love” – that is how you will continue to move forward and help others move forward too.
Things were going well and I started investing in the Stock Market – did a few courses, knew just enough to be dangerous – AND I WAS! I wiped out EVERYTHING! Gone, ka-put, beyond broke and it happened right at the beginning of a beautiful new relationship. Just when things seemed and felt amazing, everything around money collapsed … again. WHY!!!! Come on, I’ve been through enough already God, give me a break! And so he did.
I re-engaged with a book I had been given 10 years earlier, written by a man I have never met and a man who has impacted more lives and the lives of pretty much EVERY Success Guru you can find today – can you guess which book? The book is Law of Success and the author, Dr Napoleon Hill. It was in reading that book that I FINALLY got Clarity on all my life experiences. The Lessons in the Law of Success gave me context, meaning, learning and belief and enthusiasm that I could rebuild again. For the first time ever, I saw LIFE in a whole different light, I became empowered enough to see all those previous experiences so differently – in fact, it does not seem like I am telling you MY BUSINESS LIFE story now, because I learned about Accurate Thinking and I transcended the challenges I was ‘carrying’ with me.
At the same time, things were going ‘gang-busters’ for me on the internet and I was starting to make in-roads into paying off my debts.
The internet continued to grow. I was asked to organize the very first World Internet Summit and also speak about what I had achieved online. Out of that, I spawned my next business - the one you know me in today “Web Business Academy – The Education, Tools and Support for Your Greatest Web Success”. It has been in my role as Head Business Coach and Success Mentor at the Academy that I have learned and shared my greatest lessons about love, life, business and success and I’ve drawn on the experiences in my own life to help others. I took the time to get recognize my truths, own them in integrity and let go with love. Love is the single most important decision I have ever made to create greater business (and life) success. Over 18 years in business and a checker board kind of life, I learned that I am and you are a ‘Personal Culture’ - made up of all these different experiences and elements of our life. We each represent a ’way of life’. This idea of Personal Culture is founded on identifying our core personal values and core professional values – and those of our life partner too. If and when any of these core values are out of alignment, you have a problem … or two.
Another way to think of our Personal Culture is to think about it as the culture of a land – say a country. If we were each a country and if we want other people to promote and populate and generate a healthy economy within the culture of our Country, we must present an attractive ‘place’ for others to habitat within. That is a metaphor for how we conduct ourselves and in a business sense, that personal culture determines the quality of the people and how many of them come to our business and how many pay to stay and stay to play. So I learned to learn lessons and translate them into powerful forward-moving cultural behaviors within my personal culture – I made my life experiences work for me in every way possible when dealing with people and profit on my journey to greater business (and life) success.
This break-through context has made me very grateful for everything that has happened in my life experiences to date and they draw me to now bring this story right back in to focus … with and for you. One of the values of my personal culture is very much helping you and enough others get what you want so I can move to my next level of success too.
I have watched and helped 1000s of people around the world to create their greatest web success and I’ve also watched and tried to help many others. Always the same application, information and support on the part of my team and me – so what’s with the different results that people get in business? What do you make of that? Well I have found that it lies in each of our own ‘personal cultures’ and our chosen way of life which includes how we conduct ourselves and what approach we take to challenges or blocks. You may not realize it, but you have indeed chosen the experiences you are having right now, all of them, it’s all you.
And I know that without developing my personal culture, I could not have developed the wisdom and love one must possess as a way of life to transcend all the business (and life) challenges you will face on your journey to greater success, especially if you plan on being ‘famous’ for what you do. It takes a lot of gumption, gritting determination and eloquence to make it in the information products industry, speaking industry, and as a business coach, success mentor and author. People expect more from you when you are in the public eye – because you have created success with fame. You will only have your Personal Culture to draw on as your fame and fortune grows. And so many more people will come to depend on you ‘holding it all together’ and then ‘leading’ and then ‘innovating’ and then ‘teaching’ what you know.
Your way of life must be congruent with your ability to cope with these demands projected upon you from people around you – many of whom will not even know the concept of a personal culture and certainly very little awareness of the inappropriate nature of their behavior and incongruent with greater success. Your role will be to help them transcend, with love and you may even need to loan your personal culture to others at times, until they have developed one of their own. You must have one to loan. This is what is waiting for you in the game of your greater fortune and fame.
The “Banyan Tree’ and me are good friends, having meditated on these remarks over many hundreds of hours, and now I share them with you. Your greater business (and life) success and getting to your next level is not about you having the best product or best process or best resources or even the best people around you (although all these resources working at their optimum will greatly help you) - it’s about YOU being equipped with a Personal Culture of Excellence – so you can attract the right resources to get you to your next level.
If your personal culture is not evolved to cope and your vision is not one for excellence, it simply will not happen for you and you most likely will end up feeling like you just can’t get ‘there’ and that you’re going around in circles - because ‘one foot is nailed to the floor’. I believe many entrepreneurs fail to make their greater levels of success because of their inability to cope. Their personal culture did not evolve so what chance was there for their business to ever evolve either.
What you’re getting in your business right now is a direct reflection on the personal culture you have created and that you project. That is the good and the bad. I’m sure you’ve heard similar remarks, just with different words, but this is far more than just thinking or just actions, it’s a holistic approach and a lifestyle – a way of life – and it cuts through to the very essence of human beings and right down to a cellular level. (More about that shortly.)
Let’s be clear before we proceed much further. Personal Culture is a set of learned beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors which regulate your day to day life. It is: “The way you do things”. Personal Culture is determined by how we live our life. Every individual lives according to your own beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors – each family has its own set of beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors and does each continent, country, state, city, suburb and each place you to go where you interact with one or more people has its own set of beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors too ( like on Facebook and Twitter). Cultures are often set by default and that is why I have gone to this amount of effort – because I want you to develop your Personal Culture by design! You choose the set of beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors that work best for your business (and life). Simple as that!
I want to share with you now 3 Key Distinctions I have used to transcend my business (and life) challenges and transform my life.
These distinctions are not conventional thinking and they could be offensive – but they ARE very powerful and have set me apart.
Re: Offending You: So far, so good? Nothing to be offended by … yet? Great! We could be destined to work and grow together in our future. You may already disagree though with something I have said and you would be right to do so – for you. I may not have anything to offer you, this is not advice I am about to share but 3 very carefully thought out distinctions, that I’ve taken a lot of time to prepare … for you, in case you agree and want to move to your next level easier and with the insights of someone that may have ‘travelled a little further down the road’ than you have so far. Let’s get into it:
Firstly, here’s what I know to be my truths (that pre-text the 3 distinctions I want to teach you):
- there has never been a better time for entrepreneurs than right now and there has never been a tougher time than right now
- the internet represents business growth and success that can be leveraged like never before, thanks to automated technology
- we are living in an ever-increasingly rapid process of living and consuming (and I often wonder where it will all end – do the robots kill us all?)
- something MASSIVE is about to happen to how we do business
- this experience called “Social Media” has barely even started, the internet is only 15 years old
- like a massive climate change in world history, society is about to undergo its own catastrophic metamorphosis and only the strongest entrepreneurs will survive it AND thrive in it.
- what we are about to experience with the internet, social culture and the emerging economies has never been seen before and it is set to spill the balance of power across the world and rock the very foundations of the economy systems and structures as we know them today.
If the advent of the internet, consumption of technology and the ‘new economy’ game of business on social media overwhelms you, wait till you see what’s coming. It poses a threat to the very foundations of how we live, our governance and how we trade and spend. I’m talking about things like ‘virtual economy’ and ’social equity’. Like never before, the world of business and the world in general will need leaders with strong, designed and developed Personal Cultures. As we see the corporate business and government structures flatten, the need for these well-cultured leaders will be more important than ever before. And just like a country, your personal culture will soon have a ‘quality of life’ price tag put on it. You and every one of us will be exposed like never before … and to survive and thrive means you need to get to work on building your value and equity in Your Personal Culture - quickly!
“I know why I’m in this AND what I want out of it.”
I decided several years ago that if I was going to ‘do this’ it was that I must be at the very top of my game and a provider of excellence as the standard of my personal culture. In exchange for that, I want people to pay me the price that I request for my tools, education and support services designed to empower entrepreneurs. And I intended to do that by being the emergent leader because emergent leaders stand the greatest chance to THRIVE!
You have to decide right now – yes today – if you are in this – “The Game” – of business and entrepreneurship to build your fortune and fame. And if you are in the game, what are you in it for? What do you want out of it. You better get clear on that … and quickly!
So, you have decided to stay and play – Congrats! Now, who is going to be the emergent leader in your industry? It should be you!
The emergent leader, in this new and emerging economy is an evolution of a well developed personal (self) leader.
A personal leader is someone who can achieve, through earnest individual efforts, the knowledge and practical know-how:
- to lead oneself through the labyrinth of life while nourishing and realizing your creative potential;
- to become self-aware: alert of what you feel, think, experiences and intuit;
- to be responsible for yourself: and your own thoughts and feelings, words and deeds;
- to live in the present, see the world with an unprejudiced and open mind as it is now , and not as it was in the past or as it might be in the future,
- to strive after wisdom – the faculty of seeing the whole in the ‘parts’ and the infinite in the finite.
The above qualities are not magical; they can be consciously developed, practiced and strengthen.
Those who succeed in realization of these qualities naturally attract followers … and this happens without asking or waiting for society to formally confer on them the title of leader.

Results for me, my family, my clients, my peers. “The drama no longer belongs with me.” I have made mistakes, others have misunderstood me and the one thing I have found is that “no one is pure evil” (Randy Pausch).
Despite everything that’s happened and everyone that’s chosen enemy over friend or envy over love, I go on. Are You Obsessed Enough for Success Yet?
DISTINGUISH YOURSELF AS A LEADER, GET OUT OF THE GOSSIP ON FACEBOOK, IT IS NO LONGER PART OF YOUR CULTURE … AND GET ON WITH IT!
KEY DISTINCTION 2: I KNOW WHAT I WANT AND I AM NOT AFRAID TO IMPACT OR INFLUENCE OTHERS TO GET IT
I draw on my personal culture, built on years of various experiences in business and I make persuasive arguments. I can hold my own when challenged. I can gather and sort data well and I can hold an audience attention.
The funny issue with influence and persuasion is when people say it is “wrong”. These people still attempt to manipulate others in their everyday lives though. We all have a need to influence or persuade people and leaders with a strong personal culture do it with the intention of improving the life experience of the person/people who surround you.
Whether it’s asking for a cup of water or getting a sale, persuasion and influence occurs many times throughout your day whether you notice it or not. It is an inherent want within each of us to get what we desire, but it is the techniques we use and how we use them that determines if we are successful in getting what we want.
These six principles are effective techniques for influencing people to successfully get what you want (from the book “Create Your Own Future” by Brian Tracy).
- Selfish – You desire things for yourself.
- Lazy – You want easier instead of difficult.
- Greedy – You want more instead of less.
- Impatient – You want things now instead of later.
- Ignorance – You ignore inaccurate, unimportant information because you dont need to know everything.
- Ambitious – You desire something better after taking appropriate action.
- Vain – You have pride in yourself and your achievements.
I mention these elements of human nature because they may appear to be “evil” at first glance like influence is when hearing you can get other people to do what you want. However, if you think more deeply about each element, the seven elements each have their own degree of usefulness in our lives.
I also have focussed on connecting with people of greater influence and stronger impact than I possess. I have built these alliances ahead of friends in the community. That’s not to say friends in the community are less important but it means people of influence and impact can actually assist me to move forward to my greater success – so I invest my time, money and effort with them. This has proven one of the most successful things I have ever done to take my business to the next level.
Popular feels good and popular looks nice but popular is not an economy. In fact, trust is far more important in the exchange of money for goods and services than anything. Growing your business is all about creating lots of trust. You see, there are people I do not like but I would trust them with my money and conversely there are people I like but could not trust with my money.
Influence and Impact and associating with people of Influence and who have Impact lets me deliver to a confident-in-me market … help my clients get what they want so I can get what I want. Without those key attributes, I’m just another face in the crowd.
I’ve never shyed from paying – and I pay full price. I even pay bonuses if someone I purchased something from does an outstanding job. That is, I have brought expensive gifts like new state-of-the-art laptops and alike for people that I am a customer of – who represent opportunity for me to align with Influence and Impact in my marketplace.
Also, I always think in terms of how I can add-value to them – the people of influence and who have impact to help me move forward faster. I’ve built an international speaking career with more offers than I can handle because I’ve positioned myself as a person of Influence and Impact. I have written a published book – being approached to write it due to my personal alliances with people of Influence and Impact. I’ve been a VIP invite to countless events and in the future I have connections with people like Dr Napoleon Hill 3rd and Oprah Winfrey. None of that would have happend in my business if I focused on popular instead of influence and impact – THAT is what people want in their Leaders.
Here’s something I learned from studying Daniel Goleman’s “Social Intelligence” book. Most effective leaders laughed 3 times more than mediocre or average performers. So this is not about intensity or rudeness. You want to be focused and have fun and consciously seek experiences that bring you happiness.
The key to impacting and influencing others is to build rapport. Pay full attention to others and then let your brain do the rest. Which brings me to the 3rd Key Distinction.
KEY DISTINCTION 3: I UNDERSTAND HOW MY BRAIN WORKS SO I CAN CONSCIOUSLY MANIPULATE IT TO FILTER AND RESPOND TO MOVE ME FORWARD TO MY SUCCESSS
How much do you really know about your brain? The number one competence that distinguishes Leaders from the rest who are average is the singular drive to achieve - to improve performance, to make whatever I’m working on better, faster, more powerful, more effective. I have very high INTERNAL standards for success. I am not driven by what other people say, I KNOW how good something should be and work the hours to make THAT happen.
How do I control that ability?
I came to understand the disempowering nature of the Amygdala and realized THIS is why I continued to repeat patterns of success and failure. This was one of biggest break throughs for me – to understand something like this took the ‘woo woo factor’ of mindset to the science of our very being. When we are hijacked by our Amygdala – we operate in a complex, symbolic reality “he’s not treating me fairly”, “she’s dissing me” – these threats trigger ‘the amygdala’ (part of your brain) and our attention narrows and fixates and we get into a state which is sub-optimal … for most aspects of life, especially those that impact on your future success. We get really done by ourselves when the amygdala kicks in and takes over and we write that really bad email we should never have written or we post that comment on Facebook that did not serve our own personal culture nor the culture of another … and this all goes back to early childhood behaviors.
I would like to introduce you to Daniel Goleman, author of “Social Intelligence” and many other fabulous works around the concept of emotional intelligence. This video runs for nearly an hour – DO NOT GIVE UP WATCHING IT – it becomes more and more relevant as he goes on and then … it hits you and you want to watch it over and over again.

YOUR SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE IS A FORM OF CURRENCY IN YOUR PERSONAl CULTURE.
So would YOU grab that marshmellow when no one’s looking or could you resist? The sudden impulse to act, respond or react is a sign of your amygdala – your attention fixates on what is disturbing you. The more resistance and control you can exercise, the more your performance goes up.
And now to something I want to share specifically about values and behaviours on sites such as Facebook and Twitter and via written communications like email too. How are you managing your personal culture in your day to day lives on the internet? It’s been interesting, to say the least, in more recent times to join in the conversations on Facebook with business colleagues and observe the personal culture that many people are displaying and also how few people can control the amygdala – or if they can, choose to erode the intrinsic value of their personal culture. Have you even stopped to consider your public behaviour as your personal culture? Do you want people to populate your country because they embrace and love and want to absorb your culture – and stay and spend with you?
