Jennie, thanks for sharing your excellent overview of digital marketing. You obviously read many of the same sources as I do.
Marketing hasn’t changed but the media and the audiences (now we can market to individuals in a two-way process) have. The concept of Integrated Marketing Communications applies just as much to digital media as it does to traditional media. Moreover, the best results come from integrating offline media (e.g. postcards) with online media across al the three groups which you mention. The future lies in personalised two-way communication via the rapidly evolving smartphones (mobile computers, as Nokia terms them) which will be with us, everywhere and at all times. A lot of interesting work is being done concerning using mobiles as electronic wallets. (I’m consulting on just such a, confidential, project now.) Lastly, as I tell my students, and you well know, digital media is BOTH a communications channel and a sales channel but building and maintaining TRUST is all important!
